HP MODEL 45 SUCCESS STORIES
________________________________________________________________
October 1992
SUCCESS STORY #1 : PROCTER & GAMBLE (USA)
HP Model 45 provides SNA connectivity over X.25 for Procter &
Gamble.
Procter & Gamble, which is in the Packaged Goods industry
desired a more efficient alternative for connectivity from HP
3000s running SNA NRJE and IBM 3174 terminal controllers at
remote manufacturing sites to IBM mainframes at their
headquarters in Cincinnati.
Customer needs
P&G had an X.25 Private Backbone network already in place to
transport X.25 traffic. P&G needed to find a way to transport
SNA traffic back to headquarters using their existing X.25
network. Their specific needs were :
. Low-cost solution for concentrating lines into their
BB&N X.25 Backbone network,
. SNA traffic transport over their X.25 Network from
their HP3000s to their IBM host.
The HP Model 45 solution and its benefits
P&G has installed 60 HP Model45s at their remote manufacturing
sites to concentrate SNA data both from their HP 3000s and their
3174 terminal controllers. The HP Model 45 enables SNA traffic
from these multiple devices to share ONE connection to P&G's
private X.25 network and allows the SNA traffic to be routed
over P&G's existing network. At the host site, the front end
processor connects directly to the private network using
NPSI/QLLC.
The HP Model 45 was the only solution of its kind that could
meet P&G's requirements for the following reasons :
. The HP Model 45 both concentrates IBM SNA/SDLC traffic
and implements the standard IBM QLLC protocol.
. The HP Model 45 performs Local Polling features, thus
allowing to carry only the SNA Data through P&G
Network (and not the Overhead traffic)

SUCCESS STORY #2 : SPANISH GOVERNMENT - JJCM (SPAIN)
HP Model 45 provides TCP/IP and ISO/DSA transport over X.25 for
the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha
JJCM was an account very strongly controlled by Bull, but HP won
a deal of 18 HP-UX machines in December 1991 against 20 DPX Bull
machines. These HP-UX systems are going to be used in 18 remote
locations (Delegaciones and Consejerias) and will access two
central big Bull DPS 7000 & DPS6000 systems through the Spanish
X.25 Public Data Network IBERPAC.
Customer Needs
JCCM had the problem of sharing IBERPAC Accesses between the new
HP-Unix systems and the old DPS 6 minicomputers that they still
own. So, there main needs were :
. Money Savings by concentrating lines into the X.25
IBERPAC Network and thus reducing subscription
costs
. TCP/IP AND ISO/DSA transport over the X.25 IBERPAC Networ
k
. Grow from a X.25 Public Network towards a
X.25 Private Network supporting Trunk lines from
9600 bps to high speed 64 Kbps and 2.048 Mbps.
The HP Model45 solution and its benefits
The HP Model45 X.25 switch has perfectly fit their needs from
the very beginning, as they could use it as a low-cost
concentrator first and then have it evolved as a private
network.
Of course, Bull, who was very worried about loosing their
systems sales and therefore was very aggressive in proposing
their own X.25 switches (Bull CPNET 2535 and 2540) at a very low
price in order to keep control on this account JJCM by any
means.
However, JJCM preferred the HP Model 45 solution for the
following reasons :
. HP Model45 is the right infrastructure for their present and
future needs (features, number of ports,...) and they were
very confident in the future of the HP Model 45.
. HP Model45 is managed by the HP OpenView Network Management
which represents a key added-value which is not available
with other solutions (they had bought and are delighted with
HP OpenView Interconnect/DOS Manager).
. JJCM is happy with HP's support services ranging from the
consultancy/support services up to NetAssure for the HP
Model45.

SUCCESS STORY #3 : ENSO CARELCOMP (FINLAND)
ENSO CARELCOMP builds its pan-european Value-Added Network with
HP Model45s
ENSO/Carelcomp is a subsidiary of ENSO (forest industry) who is
offering Data Services and Facilities Management to big european
companies. Their Data Service business unit has become a major
european supplier of services in the IBM mainframe and
international data communications area.
Customer Needs
ENSO's systems are mainly IBM and HP with respectively 3500 IBM
users and 2000 HP 3000 users (HP 9000 is just beginning). They
manage both IBM and HP environment from the same location with 2
different management systems (HP OpenView and IBM NetView).
Their Finland network is a LAN-based network based on routers
that they manage with HP OpenView Node Manager. For their
international network, ENSO/Carelcomp wants to stay with X.25
mainly for costs reasons and they also wanted to buy private
X.25 switches with the following needs :
. Strong reliability of the equipment
. Excellent interface with Public Data Networks
. Managed by the HP OpenView Network Management
. Very good international support services
The HP Model 45 and its benefits
All their European Value-Added Network (Finland, Germany,
Netherland, UK, Spain, France,...) is now based on a 10 Model
45s backbone network and 32 HP 2335A PADs. On their central site
of Imatra, the HP Model 45 has got 14 connections (2 HP 3000s, 1
HP 9000, 2 HP 3000s through a DTC X.25, 3 HP 2335A PAD, 2 Public
Data Network Links, 1 X.25 box connection).
The HP Model 45 provided the reliability that ENSO needed as
they have only got 1 minor problem on 1 unit out of 10 Model 45
units in 3 years. One of the most liked feature of the Model 45
is the very good "Public Data Network gateway - address
translation" feature.
ENSO/Carelcomp is now willing to deploy their X.25 network in
East European countries and are absolutely willing to buy HP
Model 45s because they think that HP is the only company that
can maintain and support X.25 networking products in these
countries.
They are also very pleased that HP is investing in a new Release
3.0 because they are willing to implement higher speed trunks
between countries (up to 256 Kbps) while keeping their existing
HP Model 45 platforms... and that is one of the features that
the new HP Model 45 Plus provides!
